Shift: First Shift The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-TIME (100%) ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR - MICROBIOLOGY. This position reports to the Director of Clinical Operations and dotted line to Clinical Microbiology Division Faculty Head in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The Assistant Administrative Director - Microbiology serves as a member of senior management teams to organize, help manage resources, improve effectiveness, provide leadership to direct and indirect reports, develop and implement strategic and budgetary planning decisions, establish goals, develop divisional policy and procedure, and improve standardization and collaboration for the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Microbiology at multiple campus within UW Medicine and its affiliates to include but not limited to HMC and UWMC. Responsible for oversight of to include but not limited to testing of but not limited to bacteriology, molecular microbiology, mycology, parasitology, serology, specimen processing, and antibiotic testing; physical space of each lab; supervising direct and indirect reports and coordination with ancillary staff and division faculty in collaborative efforts; provide direction for quality assurance/improvement; preventive maintenance, safety, continuing education, and student programs for Microbiology lab; budget responsibilities of $10M for Microbiology to include but not limited to budget development with the Director of Clinical Operations, evaluating and developing budget goals based on prior performance and known upcoming expenses, and managing division expenditures to meet expected budget. Budget components include but not limited to FTE, consumables, contract and capital expense.

A senior leader in Laboratory Medicine that may step-in as a representative for Microbiology Faculty and Director of Clinical Operations at Hospital and SoM meetings. Major technical components of this position include: ensuring clinical quality excellence, improving process efficiency, centralizing and consolidating testing by location where applicable, optimizing use of physical resources, assuring financial goals, implementing innovative technical direction, assisting in the development of new diagnostic tests, and acting as a liaison between the Divisions and other UW Medicine departments, clinics, and affiliate hospitals.


Core Administrative and Operations

  • In conjunction with the faculty, Division Head and Director of Clinical Operations, set goals for the Microbiology laboratories.

  • Direct and participate in the formulation of Division goals and policies.

  • Plan strategies to ensure that the Division is able to meet future demands.

  • Develop a plan for the division staff to stay abreast of the latest technologies and to foster a collaborative environment for developing new diagnostic tests.

  • Evaluate and implement change to foster innovations and improvements in laboratory function using technological advances with direct application for laboratory-based diagnoses.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of divisional policies and changes in procedure; centralize and consolidate testing by location where appropriate; optimize use of physical resources.

  • Act as liaison for the Laboratory in place of Division Faculty and Director of Clinical Operations with other healthcare personnel.

  • Resolve all escalated related problems to include by not limited to service, testing, and quality with internal and external clients utilizing interpersonal and collaborative skills.

  • Review and approve RTS study requests and cost accountings after technical feasibility consultation with Division Faculty.

  • Prepare presentations for faculty, staff, students, and professional meetings.

  • Consult the Division Head’s advice on technical decisions for the division; use recommendation and input in technical developments, changes, and implementations.

  • Oversee in design, performance and coordination of diagnostic test development and validation in the Microbiology Division; responsible for the outcome of escalated issues.

  • Authorize and resource the development, implementation, and communication of new testing.

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant literature and scientific advances.

  • Solve problems through interactions with managers and internal and external personnel from other departments and lab divisions.

  • Responsible to communicate consistently to Lab Director(s), Faculty(s) and the Director of Clinical Operations.

  • Escalate to Lab Director(s), Faculty(s) and Director of Clinical Operations of laboratory conditions, issues, and incidents when such knowledge is needed for appropriate and timely direction of the laboratory.


  • Oversee and consult with Director of Clinical Operations priority in development of the divisional budget, prepare data for cost analyses, and manage expenditure of funds.

  • Approve departmental equipment and contract needs
  • Evaluate and recommend to the Director of Clinical Operations in negotiating contracts and pricing for equipment, supplies, standing orders and service contracts of > $10,000.

  • Create monthly, quarterly, and annual financial report with justification and resolutions for any over budgeted areas to include but not limited to FTE, projects, contracts, and consumables.

Regulatory and Compliance

  • Ensure that all Microbiology laboratories are in compliance with regulations and accrediting bodies.

  • Effective evaluation of departmental practices and process improvement.

  • Oversee Microbiology quality with tracking, benchmarking, and metrics reports to established standards to include ongoing process improvement strategies while maintaining and improving quality of clinical diagnostic testing.

  • Maintain a competent technical staff and high quality laboratory testing and training. Work with managers to coordinate continuing education and in-service education for staff when needed.

  • Direct and review quality control standards and programs.


  • Oversee and coordinate activities in Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. Manage change and foster innovations and improvements.

  • Responsible for the opening of new and replacement positions; interview, hire, orient and train new section management/employees, to include but not limited to participate in interviews and hiring processes for section MLS Lead and MLS2.

  • Delegate responsibilities, duties and tasks to optimize the use of section management staff time, skill, and expertise without compromising quality of lab operations.

  • Audit and evaluate new section staff; considering workload, staff turnover, budget, UW Medicine initiatives, etc;

  • Responsible for direct performance management of section management staff to include but not limited to employee performance, feedback, expectations, mentors, investigations, and disciplinary or remedial action as needed.

  • Provide consult to managers on performance management to include but not limited to evaluations, expectations, corrective actions, and investigations.

  • Develop and mentor Microbiology management staff to meet expected operations goals.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or related scientific discipline, MLS ASCP certification, AND 6-8 years of progressively responsible clinical technologist experience including two years in a supervisory capacity to include budget responsibility.

Additional Requirements:

  • Understanding of occupational health and safety principles and applications with demonstrated ability to direct and conduct effective quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments for complex laboratory/research operations.

  • Broad knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, and policy guidance into University programs and operations.

  • Demonstrated oversight of effective health and safety programs including developing and maturing programs and implementing program improvements and efficiencies.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.


  • PhD in Microbiology.

  • A Master’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent field applicable to the laboratory division.

  • Experience developing diagnostic laboratory tests.

  • Experience in an academic medical center.

  • Analytical and metric development.
