Bodleian Libraries: Book Team, Conservation and Collection Care, Special Collections, Weston Library, Broad Street, Oxford

Grade 5: £25,941 - £30,942 p.a. (pro rata)

Conservation and Collection Care is a department within Special Collections at the Bodleian Libraries. We are responsible for the safeguarding of collections, by preventive measures and interventive repair, and for enabling and widening access to our collections both now and in the future by using analytical techniques to facilitate research, and by sharing and teaching our findings about the materiality of collections.

You will be working in the Book Team, a group of seven members with diverse backgrounds, from apprentice-trained bookbinders, through those with a background in lab technology or literature to accredited conservators working in research and teaching. Your work will be focused largely on the repair of circulating collections, which covers open-shelf reference stock, lending stock and new binding of periodicals or presentation bindings. You will also work on minor repair of older material such as board reattachment on 17th-century bindings, taking down old bindings and rehousing using the fasciculing system, and assisting with the mounting and installation of exhibitions.

With a recognised qualification in the conservation of books, paper or library materials, or equivalent training and experience, you will have a broad knowledge, understanding and experience of the conservation profession as a whole and collection care activities. You will be a confident binder of modern material, with the ability to make accurate and neat case bindings and repair, re-back or resew case bindings and be willing to learn new techniques. You also will be sensitive to team dynamics and the importance of working well together to create a productive and comfortable working environment for all.

This is a fixed-term post for 12 months, working part-time for 21.9 hours per week (0.6 FTE). Ideally this would be worked over 3 full days, but some flexibility may be available.

Due to the nature of this post, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a basic DBS check. The possession of a criminal record will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.

You will be required to upload a supporting statement as part of your online application. Your supporting statement should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description, and explain how you meet each one. CV’s will not be considered.

Only applications received online by 12.00 midday on Monday 16 December 2019 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place during week commencing 13 January 2020.
