Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

Counsellor 2 Part time 0.8 FTE posts (Fixed term, 4 years)

We are seeking professionally qualified and experienced counsellors for 4 days per week, over 52 weeks located within the University of Dundee Counselling Service.

Candidates must hold a recognised counselling qualification (Diploma or higher degree). The vacancy is for a flexible and adaptable person with excellent communication skills at all levels who is able to respond to the demands of the counselling service. You must be able to work independently and as a member of the team.

You will carry an individual caseload offering individual counselling, working with a brief time limited model. You will contribute to the delivery of well being initiatives and play an active part within the counselling team. The work will involve assessing clients, deciding on whether further sessions would be helpful, managing risk as well as possibly some group/workshop delivery.

You will be BACP (or equivalent) accredited or be eligible for accreditation with a number of years post qualifying experience, ideally in a Higher Education setting. You will be required to uphold professional standards, adhering to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework. You will have an awareness and sensitivity in working with a culturally diverse client group.

The posts are for a fixed period of 4 years as they are funded by the Scottish Funding Council.

The format of the interview will be both presentation and interview panel. Interviews will be held within the University of Dundee, on 12th, 13th, 14th February 2020.

  • Skilled in the use of counselling assessments, interventions and case management
  • High level ability to communicate effectively at both written and oral level
  • Ability to communicate and use language in a sensitive manner
  • Personal and professional reflective skills
  • Ability to negotiate effectively in the context of highly emotive issues
  • Competent in a range of therapeutic intervention techniques with clients
  • Competent in undertaking risk assessment and risk management for individual clients


  • Experience in using CORE



  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups across the whole life course


  • Experience of working with university students
  • Experience of working with clients from different ethnic backgrounds
