Background

Founded in 1894, City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 20,000 students (over 40% postgraduate level) from more than 150 countries and staff from over 75 countries.

In the last decade, City has almost tripled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

Led by President, Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made signi?cant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university.

The Division of Optometry & Visual Science at City University London is one of the oldest optometry schools in the world. We started teaching technical optics in 1898 and have had full-time courses for optometrists since 1927. The Division currently has 22 academic staff from a broad range of disciplines including optometry, orthoptics, biology, physics, psychology and mathematics. Thirteen members of academic staff are clinically qualified and they are supplemented by about 30 visiting clinical tutors who support clinical teaching throughout the programmes. A majority of staff are research active and part of the Centre for Applied Vision Research or the Centre for Public Health Research.

The Division currently has 4 taught programmes including our highly rated BSc optometry programme and innovative Masters provision:

  • Introduction to Optometry
  • BSc (Hons) Optometry
  • MSc Clinical Optometry
  • MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner)

Our programmes aim to develop practitioners who are clinically highly competent and confident and will lead clinical practice developments in the future. It is important to us that teaching is evidence-based and informed by research. Students, at all levels, have reported a high level of satisfaction with the quality of teaching and several academic staff have won teaching awards. Our strong and positive relationships with ophthalmology departments and leading optometrists allow us to pull together an outstanding faculty of academic staff and guest lecturers for our programmes.
