Requirements
Minimum Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer science, Statistics, natural Sciences, Maths or have a degree in another subject coupled with extensive experience working with quantitative data on the fields of bioinformatics or computational biology. PhD in Bioinformatics preferential.
Proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing, high-throughput data analysis, and genomic databases. Understanding of prokaryote and viral genome structures a must.
Experience delivering useable systems for a broad audience with differing backgrounds and bioinformatics skills.
Providing advice, training and support to other researchers in the areas of bioinformatics and data analysis.
Experienced in independently solving bioinformatics problems, as part of PhD work and demonstrated by several years of on-the-job training.
Excellent programming skills, eg Python, Perl, R, Java, C++
Excellence in Unix/Linux operating system
Experience with managing and processing next-generation sequencing data
Experience with using compute cluster and batch queuing systems
Strong grounding in microbial genome biology
Experience with genome assembly methodologies and pipelines
Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities
To seek out, understand and process appropriate large-scale datasets for the establishment of a Uganda specific database of pathogen genomes.
    To implement efficient scalable approaches to collate whole genome datasets, utilising numerous data types drawn from a diverse range of sources.
    To maintain knowledge of the state-of-the-art in bioinformatics analysis methodologies for pathogen genomics, to evaluate a broad range of approaches/tools and identify the most effective tools or methods.
    To implement a bioinformatic resource for routine utility within UMIC to aid local use, data interpretation and to work with the existing team to drive pathogen surveillance in the region.
    Identify realistic requirements for new software and work, with collaborating programmers, and contribute to tool development by extending or modifying existing software where appropriate.
    Drive and foster interactions with the research and public health communities both locally and internationally.
    Document protocols developed to level of rigour required for scientific publication and for further use by colleagues. 8. Present data to wide ranging audiences (including contributions to publications) for information exchange and to demonstrate the progress and impact of own work.
