Academic and Study Skills Tutor (Numeracy Specialist) is part of a central service in the Directorate of Student Support Services. This is a brand new post, and has been created to complement the work of the Learner Development team to help enhance the package of support to all students at Manchester Metropolitan University. The role will work closely with academic colleagues, and support staff, including our Q-Step centre of excellence, to promote academic success and an enhanced learning experience for students. They will support and advise on a range of academic and study skills focussed around numeracy contributing to our coordination and delivery of an inclusive service. As a result, you will work across all student levels (foundation through to Doctoral) and across all programmes, delivering embedded teaching as well as standalone provision. Ultimately, this role will contribute to the innovative development, implementation and delivery of Learner Development provision to prepare, develop and empower students to excel at Manchester Metropolitan University.

From first impressions through to everyday advice and career guidance, our sector-leading Student and Academic Services department is responsible for the entire university experience of our students. Spanning the complete student lifecycle, we take students on their journey from enquiry through to enrolment and on-course support, plus graduation and beyond. As part of our team you’ll be able to have a lasting and positive impact on the lives and futures of our students.

Some of the key responsibilities of your role will be:

  • Develop and deliver regular non-subject specific study skills materials in the field of numeracy for workshops, webinars and 1-1 sessions endeavouring to meet the needs of all students, including distance learners. Candidates are expected to have experience in producing and delivering non-subject specific numeracy sessions and developing web based support materials.
  • Work collaboratively with academic colleagues to help scaffold the student learning experience by embedding support into programmes, delivering innovative and engaging sessions that appreciates each learner as unique.
  • Develop the Learner Development provision by remaining active in the different communities and sharing best practice within the team.

Alongside Academic and Study Skills experience in the field of numeracy, candidates are expected to have an understanding of the issues affecting students’ learning experience in a diverse higher education environment. You will also be able to ensure effective referral for students, who may need additional study skills or other specialist support/guidance. Applicants must be educated to degree level or equivalent and have a Postgraduate certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, or equivalent membership (e.g. Higher Education Academy).

If you are looking to help shape a role and make a difference to the student experience, we would love to hear from you.

Please note interviews are provisionally scheduled to take place on 7th October.
