The Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Counselor, Lead.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) the Academic Counselor, Lead will provide substantive advising and student services for undergraduates, focusing on those who have undeclared academic interests, who are preparing for admission to majors, who are pre-professional students, or who are changing their academic goals. Important aspects of the work include development and holistic counseling, attention to detail, and frequent contact with the University’s administrative system.

This position requires the use of sound judgment and thorough understanding of degree requirements and available student services. The position requires an understanding of OMA&D and our mission to provide a wide range of educational services to first generation and educationally/economically disadvantaged students at the University of Washington and throughout the State of Washington.

The Academic Counselor, Lead for EOP will work with faculty and administrative units to promote and develop strategies and policies related to work with low-income, first generation students and underrepresented students as well as undergraduate student preparation for department/program acceptance. This position will work with the program director to coordinate and implement successful retention and graduation strategies for students from EOP target populations.

• Management of an EOP student caseload; comprehensive diagnosis and needs assessment necessary to determine the academic, personal, financial, career, and cultural needs of project participants; participation in planning, development and implementation of programming and activities for students; providing personalized advising and counseling for EOP students in areas of academics, career, financial aid, financial management, personal issues, and graduate/professional school. (50%)
• Represent EOP in collaborative partnerships on and off campus; work with program staff to develop innovative programming that increases the likelihood of success for EOP students. (10%)
• Maintain liaison relationships with academic departments, administrative offices, and agencies which provide assistance to participants within and outside the university; collaborate with OMA&D and other university programs focusing on student retention, graduation, and success. (10%)
• Maintain complete electronic files for program evaluation purposes, and prepare reports as necessary on assessment, academic progress, program activities, and financial aid. (5%)
• Participate in regular meetings with the EOP Director and staff to monitor and evaluate the program; work with the EOP staff to develop new and innovative proposals and performance reports. (5%)
• Engage students in research, internship, and leadership opportunities. Promote student preparation for graduate/ professional school opportunities in collaboration with the McNair Program and Early Identification Program. (5%)
• Assist students with Hardship Withdrawal Petition, Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress Appeal or Reinstatement Petition; providing students with letters of recommendation or support. (5%)
• Engage in professional development activities designed to build an ongoing knowledge base of student resources and best practices for implementation. (5%)
• Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
• Represent the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and OMA&D in collaborative partnerships on and off campus; work with program staff to develop innovative programming that increases the likelihood of success for EOP students.

• A Master's degree is required.
• A minimum of three years of experience in academic advising or related experience including knowledge of academic degree requirements and curriculum, student services, and community resources; demonstrated history of working with a diverse multicultural student population, which includes working with low income, first generation, and/or underrepresented populations; strong organizational skills, including strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and attention to detail.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university, teaching experience, familiarity with multiple languages.
